Felton suspended for Tar Heels’ opener
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) – North Carolina point guard Raymond
Felton will miss the fourth-ranked Tar Heels’ season-opener against Santa
Clara next week. Felton was suspended one game for playing in an uncertified
summer league game, the school announced Friday night.
Felton, a junior, is eligible to return against BYU in the Maui Invitational
on November 22.
Felton saw action in one game in the Chavis League, a summer basketball
circuit in Raleigh. Felton mistakenly assumed the league was certified as in
past years, but the NCAA had not certified it, according to the school.
Playing in a non-certified league is against NCAA rules, so North Carolina
declared Felton ineligible for the opener. The NCAA then restored his
eligibility with the one-game penalty, the school said.
The school appealed to the NCAA, which denied the petition last week.
Felton was last year’s preseason pick as player of the year in the Atlantic
Coast Conference, and a third-team all-ACC pick after racking up 11.5 points
and 7.1 assists per ball game.
He led the ACC in assists and was ranked fifth nationally.
