Final Score: (10) Arizona 80, San Diego 69

Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) – Mustafa Shakur led three Arizona players who
scored at least 20 points as the 10th-ranked Wildcats opened their 2004-05
season with an 80-69 victory over San Diego at the McKale Center in the first
round of the Preseason NIT. Shakur poured in a career-high 23 points, while
Salim Stoudamire and Ivan Radenovic each contributed 20 for the Wildcats
(1-0), who extended their win streak to 13 games in preseason NIT play.
Arizona has won the event the last three times it has participated, taking
home the championship in 1990, 1995 and 1999. The Wildcats will host Wright
State, which upset Tulsa 72-66 in overtime Tuesday, in Thursday’s second
round. Brice Vounang racked up 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Toreros
(0-1), who look much improved from last season’s 4-26 squad but could not
match the Wildcats’ firepower. Brandon Gay added 17 points in defeat.
