Southern California fires Bibby

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Southern California fired its head
basketball coach, Henry Bibby, just four games into the season on Monday.

“I understand that the timing of this is unorthodox,” said USC athletic
director Mike Garrett. “But I feel strongly that our men’s basketball program
needs to go in a different direction. And it was obvious to me that the change
had to be made now.”

Assistant coach Jim Saia will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the
season.

“I am confident that (Saia) and the other assistants will do a great job,”
Garrett said.

Bibby leaves the Trojans, who are 2-2 this season, with a 131-111 overall
record. He was in his ninth year as their head coach, after spending one year
as an assistant with the school.

Bibby’s stint was highlighted by a trip to the Elite Eight in 2001. He also
guided the Trojans to the NCAA tournament in 1997 and 2002, but were under
.500 in each of the past two seasons.

The 40-year-old Saia, who is known for his defensive strategies, is in his
first year at Southern California. He spent the previous seven seasons as an
assistant at UCLA.
