Majerus expected to be named head coach at USC

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Rick Majerus has reportedly been named
the new head basketball coach at Southern California.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, Majerus — who will
receive a five-year deal — will be introduced as the Trojans’ next coach at a
Wednesday afternoon press conference.

The 56-year-old Majerus, though, will not start coaching USC until after the
season, which means interim coach Jim Saia will finish out the campaign.
Majerus, who currently works as an analyst for ESPN, will be forced to
immediately abandon the job and pay the network a buyout of nearly $500,000.

The position was vacant after the club fired Henry Bibby earlier in the week,
just four games into the season. Bibby left the Trojans with a 131-111
overall record. He was in his ninth year as their head coach, after spending
one year as an assistant with the school.

Majerus spent 15 seasons as the head man at Utah, but resigned in January,
2004 because of heart problems. During his tenure, he compiled a 308-90 mark,
while making 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the national
championship game in 1998. The club lost to Kentucky in the title contest.

He has also coached at Marquette and Ball State, compiling a career mark of
407-142 in 19 years.

Majerus, who interviewed for the UCLA job two years ago, currently lives in a
hotel in Milwaukee to be near his mother.
