Majerus named head coach at USC
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Rick Majerus accepted an offer to become
the head basketball coach at Southern California and was introduced Wednesday
The 56-year-old Majerus, though, will not start coaching USC until after the
season, which means interim coach Jim Saia will finish out the campaign.
Majerus, who was working as an analyst for ESPN, had to give up the position
which he held for just one month.
The USC job was vacant after the club fired Henry Bibby last week, just four
games into the season. Bibby left the Trojans with a 131-111 overall
record. He was in his ninth year as their head coach after spending one
season as an assistant with the school.
Majerus spent 15 seasons as the head man at Utah, but resigned in January,
2004 because of heart problems. During his tenure, he compiled a 308-90 mark,
while making 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the
national championship game in 1998. The club lost to Kentucky in the title
He has also coached at Marquette and Ball State, compiling a career mark of
407-142 in 19 years.
