Illinois tops Indiana to remain unbeaten

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – James Augustine scored a game-high 16 points
and grabbed five rebounds to lead No. 1 Illinois past Indiana, 60-47, at
Assembly Hall.

Luther Head netted 13 points, while Dee Brown finished with 12 for the
Fighting Illini (23-0, 9-0 Big Ten), who remained one of two undefeated teams
left in Division I. Deron Williams scored only one point in the win, but
dished out a game-high 11 assists.

“We got a ‘W.’ That’s all I care about,” said Williams. “I just didn’t shoot
the ball well. I still got my teammates involved. That’s what I try to do.”

Robert Vaden and D.J. White had 12 points apiece for the Hoosiers (10-10,
5-4), who have lost three of their last four contests. Marshall Strickland
finished with seven points in the losing effort. Indiana was without leading
scorer Bracey Wright, who sat out the game with an injured ankle.

Illinois jumped out to a 20-3 lead, limiting the Hoosiers to one field goal in
the opening 10 minutes. Augustine scored eight points in the flurry.

White’s three-point play then sparked a 17-6 burst over the next 8:15 for
Indiana as the Hoosiers got within 26-20 heading to the break. White closed
the half with a jumper along the baseline.

The Illini didn’t waste much time taking control in the opening moments of the
second half, using a 13-2 run to pull ahead by 17. Brown highlighted the surge
with a pair of three-pointers.

Indiana was able to cut it to 10 at 45-35 with under seven minutes left, but
Roger Powell, Jr. converted a three-point play to seal the win for Illinois.

“We weren’t sharp that’s for sure,” Illinois head coach Bruce Weber said.
“You’re not going to play perfect all the time. You wish you could but we
didn’t.”

The Fighting Illini stretched their lead to as many as 18 in the final 20
minutes and cruised to the 13-point victory.
