Waugh extended at Stetson

DeLand, FL (Sports Network) – Derek Waugh, the men’s basketball coach at
Stetson University, has signed a three-year contract extension, the school
announced Wednesday.

“Derek and his staff are taking our men’s basketball program in the right
direction,” director of athletics Jeff Altier said. “They have overcome
significant obstacles, they have enhanced recruiting, especially within the
state of Florida, and they have effectively changed the style of play that
will help the program reach a high level of success in the near future.”

At 33 years old, Waugh is one of the youngest head coaches in Division I. He
has a 51-73 record in his five seasons with the Hatters, including a 10-14
mark so far this year.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to continue my coaching career here
at Stetson for the foreseeable future,” Waugh said. “Our staff has worked very
hard to ensure that we have improved each year, and I think we have the pieces
in place to be a conference contender and hopefully champion year after year.”

Waugh was originally hired as an assistant in July of 1997, gaining national
notoriety for leaving a lucrative law practice to pursue a coaching career. He
took over the program early in the 2000-01 season.
