McCants out for Heels’ game with N.C. State
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) – North Carolina star forward Rashad McCants
will miss Tuesday’s contest between the second-ranked Tar Heels and in-state
rival North Carolina State because of an intestinal disorder.
McCants, the ACC’s leading scorer in 2003-04, has been bothered by the ailment
for more than a week and played just 19 minutes in Saturday’s 88-56 victory
The 6-4 junior stands second among Tar Heel players with a 15.8 points per
game average and has made a team-best 50 three pointers this season. McCants
currently ranks third in the ACC with a 49.1 percent field goal percentage.
It is not known whether McCants will be in uniform when North Carolina travels
to Maryland on Sunday.
“It’s a tough break for Rashad, but his teammates know they have to raise the
level of their games in his absence,” said Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams.
“Of course it’s a difficult time of year to lose a key player, but it’s part
of the game and we have to keep playing.”
McCants earned first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America laurels as a
sophomore after averaging 20 points, 4.6 rebounds and shooting 40.8 percent
from three-point range.
The Tar Heels currently sit atop the ACC standings with a 10-2 record and
carry a 22-3 overall mark into Tuesday’s battle with the Wolfpack.
