East Carolina’s Herrion will not return as coach
Greenville, NC (Sports Network) – East Carolina University announced Tuesday
that men’s basketball coach Bill Herrion will be let go at season’s end.
Herrion is in his sixth year with the Pirates and has yet to compile a winning
season. Under his guidance, East Carolina is 69-96, including a dismal 8-17
mark this season.
“Nick Floyd (ECU Senior Associate Athletics Director) and I met with Coach
Herrion Tuesday morning and asked him to relinquish the head basketball
coaching position at the end of this season to work with a major fund raising
initiative for ECU Athletics,” director of athletics Terry Holland said. “As
you can imagine, it was a very emotional meeting for all concerned and we
asked Coach Herrion to take some time before responding.”
Prior to taking the helm with the Pirates, Herrion spent eight seasons at
Drexel. He won at least 20 games on six occasions and made the NCAA Tournament
three times with the Dragons. Herrion went 167-71 with Drexel and was named
conference Coach of the Year four times (1994-96, 1999).
