Bellairs fired at VMI
Lexington, VA (Sports Network) – Bart Bellairs has been fired as the men’s
basketball coach at Virginia Military Institute.
“It was a difficult decision, but I felt we needed a new direction and
leadership,” said athletic director Donny White. “We are very appreciative of
Bart Bellairs’ tenure as our head basketball coach, and I have asked him to
stay on with us to assist our athletic programs.”
The Keydets finished the 2004-05 season 9-18 overall and failed to qualify for
the Big South Tournament after posting a 3-13 mark in league play.
Bellairs, who had five years remaining on his current contract, posted a
record of 116-191 record in 11 seasons with the Keydets. He attained more
career wins than any other coach at the school, but did not have a winning
season since going 14-13 during the 1997-98 campaign.
White said Bellairs will be involved in marketing and promotion of VMI’s
varsity teams and assist in managing Big South marketing contracts.
