UC-Riverside to get new basketball coach

Riverside, CA (Sports Network) – UC-Riverside’s longtime men’s basketball
coach John Masi will not return to the hardwood next season, the school
announced on Monday.

In his 26-year career as the Highlanders’ head coach, Masi posted a 462-269
overall record – a .632 winning percentage. That record includes 178
California Collegiate Athletics Association wins – more than any other coach
in history.

UCR finished the 2004-05 season with a 9-19 record, including a 4-14 mark in
the Big West Conference, which was not good enough to qualify for the
conference tournament.

UCR was a basketball power at the Division-II level, before moving up to
Division-I play beginning with the 2000-01 season. It was that transition
that caused Masi and the Highlanders to struggle as UCR posted a 42-89
record since moving to the Dvision-I level.

Those five losing seasons represent the only ones of Masi’s career.

“In assessing the entirety of the program over six seasons, I believe it is
time for a change,” UC-Riverside athletic director Stan Morrison said.

Morrison said the university’s search for a new coach will begin immediately.
Meanwhile, Masi will be reassigned within the athletics department.
