San Jose State names Nessman men’s basketball coach
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) – San Jose State named George Nessman its new
men’s head basketball coach on Tuesday.
Nessman, who signed a four-year contract with the Spartans, served as a
recruiting coordinator with the University of California, coaching the post
players during the 2004-05 season.
He replaces Phil Johnson, who resigned following the end of a dismal campaign
for the Spartans. San Jose lost its last 11 games en route to a 6-23 finish.
Johnson compiled a 31-83 in four seasons with the Spartans.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me. Being in the coaching profession and
having the opportunity to take over a Division I program represents the
pinnacle of challenges in the college basketball world,” says Nessman. “The
support of the university administration and from the new athletics
administration led by Tom Bowen will make it fun to take on this challenge.”
Nessman owns a career mark of 359-156 in 17 seasons of head coaching
experience with Portville College, Bakersfield College and De La Salle
high school in California.
