Theus hired to coach Aggies
Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) – Former NBA player and current Louisville
assistant Reggie Theus was named head coach at New Mexico State during a press
Theus has been an assistant under Rick Pitino for the past two seasons and
this year has helped lead the Cardinals to their first Final Four since the
program’s national title run in 1986.
“Reggie will be one of the dynamic coaches in the game,” Pitino said. “He has
the total package.”
Theus, 47, takes over for Hall of Fame coach Lou Henson, who retired in
January for health reasons. Henson compiled a 779-413 career record and ranks
sixth among Division I coaches in career wins.
Although Theus’ only previous head coaching experience came with the ABA’s Las
Vegas Slam in 2002, Aggies athletic director D. McKinley Boston isn’t worried.
“He’s learned from one of the best in the profession, and I think he’s going
to provide great leadership for our basketball team,” Boston said.
A 13-year NBA veteran, Theus is one of only five players in league history to
collect at least 19,000 points and 6,000 assists.
