Miller time at Eastern Illinois
Charleston, IL (Sports Network) – Mike Miller was named the new men’s head
basketball coach at Eastern Illinois on Monday. Miller replaces Rick Samuels,
whose 25-year relationship with the school came to end after the 2004-05
campaign when his contract was not renewed.
The Panthers struggled to a 12-16 mark this past season, including 7-9 in the
Ohio Valley Conference. Eastern Illinois was ousted by Tennessee Tech in the
first round of the conference tournament.
“We had applicants from coast to coast. After reviewing the candidates and
contacting numerous references, the response we received across the board
indicated Mike was one of the best coaching prospects in America,” said
director of athletics Dr. Richard McDuffie. “We met with him at the Final Four
in St. Louis and he sold us on his desire to lead our men’s basketball
Miller served as an assistant at Kansas State for the past five years. Prior
to his stint with the Wildcats, Miller was the head coach at Texas State
(formerly Southwest Texas) for six years and guided the Bobcats to a berth in
the NCAA Tournament in 1997. That season, he was named Southland Conference
Coach of the Year.
