Dotson sentenced to 35 years in prison
Waco, TX (Sports Network) – Carlton Dotson was sentenced to 35 years in prison
Wednesday for killing former Baylor basketball teammate Patrick Dennehy.
Dotson, who pleaded guilty to the murder last week, faced five years to life
in prison. His trial was set to start earlier this week before he
surprisingly pleaded guilty without a sentencing deal with prosecutors.
State District Judge Ralph Strother handed down the sentence based on
documents filed by prosecutors and defense lawyers. Court Coordinator Joyce
Smith confirmed the decision Wednesday morning for the Sports Network.
Dotson was arrested and charged with the shooting death of Dennehy on July 21,
2003. Dennehy went missing in June of that year and his body was discovered
over a month later in rock quarry near Waco.
Dotson was found incompetent to stand trial late in 2003 and was sent to a
state mental hospital. He was returned to prison in February after a hospital
psychologist ruled Dotson competent.
