Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) – Terrence Roberts scored 19 points and grabbed
14 rebounds to lead 16th-ranked Syracuse to a 67-62 victory over a stubborn
Cornell squad in the second round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the
Carrier Dome. Demetris Nichols chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds for the
Orange (2-0), who trailed by three late in the contest before rattling off a
15-4 run to put it away. Gerry McNamara scored 17 points for Syracuse, but
missed all 10 of his three-point tries and the Orange finished a dismal 1
for-19 from beyond the arc. Syracuse will now advance to the semifinal
round next Thursday at Madison Square Garden against the winner of the
Lubbock regional that features Texas Tech. Adam Gore scored 22 points and
Lenny Collins added 20 for Cornell (1-1), which was trying to beat its state
rival for the first time since 1968. The Big Red have now lost 29 straight
meetings with the Orange.
