Durham, NC (Sports Network) – J.J. Redick scored 19 points and Shelden
Williams added 17 points, as top-ranked Duke began its season with a 64-47
triumph over Boston University in the opening round of the Preseason NIT at
Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils (1-0) won despite missing their first nine field-goal attempts
from the floor and shooting just 3-of-16 from three-point range.
Next up for Duke in the tournament will be Seton Hall on Wednesday. The
Pirates beat Manhattan, 66-52, on Monday.
Ben Colbyn had nine points to lead the Terriers (0-1), who also got eight
points apiece from Tony Gaffney and Kevin Gardner but had 26 turnovers.
BU shot 49 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for Duke, but the
difference in the game came at the free throw line. Duke hit on 17-of-26
attempts, compared to 2-of-4 for the Terriers.
The Blue Devils, guided again by Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski,
finished last year with a record of 27-6 and begin this season with a full
array of weapons. The team returns 10 players, including All-America
selections in Redick and Williams. Duke won the ACC Tournament last season
before losing to Michigan State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Duke has won six consecutive season openers overall, last losing to Stanford
on November 11, 1999. The Blue Devils have won 24 consecutive home openers
dating back to a 76-75 setback to Vanderbilt on November 28, 1981.
The Terriers scored eight of the game’s first 10 points, but Duke would
eventually take the lead after going on an 8-0 run. Williams capped the burst
with two free throws to give Duke a 24-19 edge with 7:21 left until halftime.
A 14-2 run to end the half had Duke in front 40-26 at intermission. Redick
finished the rally with a layup with just under a minute left, and BU couldn’t
get closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Terriers finished 20-9 in 2004-05 and advanced to the postseason NIT
before losing to Georgetown in the first round.
The Blue Devils are 15-2 all-time in the Preseason NIT with championships in
1985 and 2000. Duke also finished as the runner-up in 1996 and in third place
in 1990…Duke leads the all-time series against the Terriers, 6-0…The Blue
Devils are 77-24 in season openers, including 24-2 under Krzyzewski…Josh
McRoberts had 10 rebounds for Duke…Lee Melchionni had eight points for
Duke…BU outrebounded Duke, 33-27.
