Brewington leaves Providence
Providence, RI (Sports Network) – Providence College junior guard Dwight
Brewington has left the team for personal reasons.
The school did not provide details in its release, but the Providence Journal
reported in its Wednesday edition that Brewington wants to concentrate on
The paper also said Brewington missed a team meeting earlier this month and
had been suspended by head coach Tim Welsh, who added that the player left the
team of his own choosing.
“His intention is to leave the basketball team and concentrate on academics,”
Welsh told the Journal. “He said his plan is to stay here for the year and
then weigh his options in the spring. He was not kicked off the team.
“He has ideas on his own and they don’t involve basketball at this point. I
didn’t believe it either. He says he wants to be a student for the time
Brewington was Providence’s leading returning scorer. He averaged 13.3 points
and 4.3 rebounds last season.
Welsh also told the paper that Brewington will be allowed to keep his
scholarship “as long as he’s in good [academic] standing for the year.”
