‘Nova thumps Stony Brook in opener
Villanova, PA (Sports Network) – Randy Foye poured in 21 points, as No. 5
Villanova opened its season with a 78-35 thrashing of Stony Brook.
Foye added had seven rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats (1-0), who also
got 16 points from Allan Ray and 13 from Mike Nardi. Villanova outrebounded
the Seawolves, 46-22, and led the entire way, by as much as 45 points.
This is the first time since 1996-97 that the Wildcats have entered the season
with a national ranking.
Bobby Santiago and Marcus Cox each had seven points to top Stony Brook (0-1),
which made just 1-of-11 foul shots and made only 32 percent of its field goal
Villanova scored the game’s first five points and built a double-digit
advantage at 18-8 on Nardi’s layup with 11:50 left in the first half. The
Wildcats embarked on a 15-3 spurt later in the half to extend to a 37-13
margin on Ray’s layup with 3:36 left. It was 37-16 at the intermission.
The Wildcats led by at least 21 the rest of the game. They used a 17-2 run to
extend to a 56-20 advantage following Dante Cunningham’s layup with 10:45
remaining. The lead grew to 45 at 75-30 on a three-pointer by Dwayne Anderson.
Will Sheridan pulled down 11 rebounds for Villanova, which made 50 percent of
its field goal attempts and went 10-of-25 from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats have taken 11 of their last 13 openers. Villanova is 8-0 all-time
in season openers at the Pavilion…Villanova returns to action on Sunday,
Nov. 27, when it hosts Lehigh…Villanova star forward Curtis Sumpter
underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate
ligament in his left knee. He is sidelined indefinitely.
