Malibu, CA (Sports Network) – Josh Boone scored 18 points and pulled down 12
rebounds, as the third-ranked Connecticut Huskies defeated the Pepperdine
Waves, 75-56, in the season opener for both teams at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Denham Brown added 16 points and Rudy Gay dropped 15 points, 10 rebounds and
five blocks for the Huskies (1-0), who improved to 16-4 in season openers
under head coach Jim Calhoun. Michael Gerrity scored 19 points on 6-of-10
shooting with four assists for the Waves (0-1), who have lost all three times
they have faced Connecticut. Gregg Barlow added 10 points and eight
rebounds, while Derick Grubb netted nine points and eight boards in the loss.

Villanova, PA (Sports Network) – Randy Foye poured in 21 points, as No. 5
Villanova opened its season with a 78-35 thrashing of Stony Brook. Foye added
seven rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats (1-0), who also got 16 points
from Allan Ray and 13 from Mike Nardi. Villanova outrebounded the Seawolves,
46-22, and led the entire way, by as much as 45 points. Bobby Santiago and
Marcus Cox each had seven points to top Stony Brook (0-1), which made just 1-
of-11 foul shots and made only 32 percent of its field goal attempts.

Spokane, WA (Sports Network) – J.P. Batista scored 23 points and grabbed nine
rebounds as ninth-ranked Gonzaga held off Idaho, 69-60, in the season-opener
for both clubs. Derek Raivio added 19 points for the Bulldogs (1-0), who had
to close the game with a 10-3 run to escape with the nine-point victory.
Adam Morrison tallied 15 points and grabbed eight boards as Gonzaga
next heads to the Maui Invitational where it will open play against 24th-
ranked Maryland on Monday. Brett Ledbetter scored 14 points for the Vandals
(0-1), who drew within 59-57 with just under five minutes remaining, but
couldn’t get any closer and fell to the Zags for a sixth straight time.

Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) – Craig Smith scored 22 points and pulled
down nine rebounds, as the 11th-ranked Boston College Eagles easily defeated
the Dartmouth Big Green, 80-61, in the season opener for both teams. The game
was Boston College’s first ever as a member of the ACC after leaving the Big
East. Sean Marshall added 15 points for Boston College (1-0), which has won
six of the last seven games against Dartmouth (0-1). Louis Hinnant and Jared
Dudley each added 12 points. Dudley also had 10 rebounds. Leon Pattman netted
14 points and had six rebounds for Dartmouth. Calvin Arnold chipped in 11

New York, NY (Sports Network) – Taurean Green scored 23 points, as Florida
beat No. 16 Syracuse, 75-70, in the championship game of the Coaches vs.
Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden. Lee Humphrey added 13 points,
Joakim Noah scored 12 and Al Horford added 11 points for the Gators (4-0),
who used a 12-0 run late in the second half to beat the Orange. Demetris
Nichols had a career-high 24 points and Gerry McNamara had 13 points and 10
assists to pace Syracuse (3-1), which struggled by shooting 37.5 percent
from the field.

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – James Augustine had 18 points and 14
rebounds as the 17th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini opened their season
by breezing past the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 90-65, at Assembly Hall.
Dee Brown had 19 points and Rich McBride scored 15 for the Fighting Illini
(1-0), who opened their season following a heartbreaking loss to North
Carolina in the national championship game last season. Steve Holdren led
all scorers on the night with 28 points and added six rebounds. Ben
Beran, with 11 points, was the only other double-digit scorer for the
Jackrabbits (1-2), who failed to win their second straight after defeating
Northern Colorado on Monday.

New York, NY (Sports Network) – Justin Gray forced the second overtime with a
jumper and finished with 18 points, as 19th-ranked Wake Forest upended Texas
Tech, 78-73, in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at
Madison Square Garden. Trent Strickland and Kyle Visser each finished with
16 points and 16 boards, as the Demon Deacons (3-1) dominated on the glass,
outrebounding the Red Raiders, 66-45, in the first meeting between the
schools. Jarrius Jackson had 27 points and Martin Zeno finished with 23
points and eight rebounds for Texas Tech (2-2), which was hurt by 10 missed
free throws (14-of-24).

Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) – Marco Killingsworth had 28 points on 12-
of-18 shooting and added 13 rebounds and six assists as 23rd-ranked Indiana
Hoosiers defeated the Nicholls State Colonels, 99-65, at Assembly Hall.
Marshall Strickland had 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting and Lewis Monroe netted
10 points and seven assists for the Hoosiers (1-0), who opened up their season
with a victory for the sixth-straight time under coach Mike Davis. Stefan
Blaszczynski scored 26 points to lead the Colonels (0-1), who were
outrebounded 55-21.

College Park, MD (Sports Network) – Mike Jones netted 22 points on 8-of-11
shooting to lead the 24th-ranked Maryland Terrapins past the Fairleigh
Dickinson Knights, 111-85, at the Comcast Center. Nik Caner-Medley and Chris
McCray added 18 points and six rebounds each for Maryland (1-0), which
improved to 14-3 in season openers under head coach Gary Williams, including
11-0 at home. Ekene Ibekwe added 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Gordon Klaiber paced Fairleigh Dickinson with 20 points, four blocks and four
steals. Cameron Tyler and John Blackgrove each netted 17 points for the
Knights (1-2), who have lost two of three.
