Louisville, KY (Sports Network) – Taquan Dean had 18 points and Juan Palacios
added 16, leading seventh-ranked Louisville to a 78-61 victory over Tennessee-
Martin in the season opener for both schools at Freedom Hall.

Brandon Jenkins contributed 12 points, while Terrence Williams chipped in 11
for the Cardinals (1-0), who have won 11 of their last 13 season openers. Head
coach Rick Pitino improved to 17-3 in opening games during his collegiate
coaching career and now owns a 450-159 mark in his 20th season.

Jeremy Kelly paced Tennessee-Martin with a game-high 31 points on 8-of-15
shooting. Kelly also sank 10-of-13 free throws, as the Skyhawks (0-1) never
rebounded from a poor start to the second half.

Palacios scored on a layup to give the Cardinals a 26-20 lead with less than
five minutes to go in the first half. Perrin Johnson later added a dunk and
Louisville owned a 30-24 edge with 1:45 left. The Cardinals then headed to the
break with a 31-26 advantage.

Dean’s basket early in the second half capped a big Louisville run and made it
a 44-28 contest. Palacios buried a jumper for a 50-35 cushion, but the
Skyhawks trimmed the deficit to 57-48 on consecutive three’s by Kelly with
about eight minutes to go in the game.

Tennessee-Martin never posted a serious threat the rest of the way and
suffered the 17-point setback.

Game Notes

Saturday’s contest was the first-ever meeting between the Skyhawks and
Cardinals on the hardwood…Louisville improved to 111-40 all-time versus
teams from the Ohio Valley Conference…Jared Newson had 14 points in a losing
effort for the Skyhawks.
