Anteaters gobble up Stanford
Palo Alto, CA (Sports Network) – Ross Schraeder scored 19 points to lead Cal-
Irvine to a 79-63 upset of 13th-ranked Stanford at Maples Pavilion.
Darren Fells netted 18 points with nine rebounds and Mark Kelley added 10
points for the Anteaters (2-1), who gave head coach Pat Douglass his 500th
Dan Grunfeld had a game-high 29 points for the Cardinal (0-1), who made their
first appearance of the season after losing in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament last year.
Stanford hit the first basket of the game, but that was its only lead of the
Schraeder nailed a three-pointer with 16:29 left in the first half as the
Anteaters jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead and never looked back.
Grunfeld hit a basket from beyond the arc to pull the Cardinal within two at
19-17 with 11:40 left in the first half. But that was as close as they would
get for the rest of the game.
Cal-Irvine went on a 13-5 run after the Grunfeld basket and led 43-35 at the
end of the first 20 minutes.
The Cardinal made it a five-point game after a Grunfeld bucket and the score
was 61-56 with under four minutes to play. But, Shamar Armstrong nailed a
three-pointer and completed a three-point play to give the Anteaters an 11-
point lead. Fells then scored six straight points to seal the victory.
“To come up here and beat a fine ballclub will give us great confidence,” said
Douglass. “I am very pleased with the effort we gave and obviously we shot the
ball well. Shamar’s three-pointer late in the game was big for us.”
This was the first victory for the Anteaters against the Cardinal in six
tries…Cal-Irvine shot 59 percent from the field…Stanford shot 34 percent
from the field…The Anteaters outrebounded the Cardinal 35-30.
