No. 1 Duke dominates Davidson

Durham, NC (Sports Network) – Shelden Williams had 20 points 10 rebounds and
nine blocks, as the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils defeated the Davidson
Wildcats, 84-55, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

J.J. Redick scored a game-high 29 points for Duke. Lee Melchionni had 16
points and seven rebounds for the Blue Devils (3-0), who now head to New York
for the semifinals of the Preseason NIT on Wednesday against Drexel.

“We have a lot of weapons on the team, and for most of the season, we’re going
to rely on the top two guys, me and J.J.,” Williams said. “But we know if
we’re not having a good night, we can always rely on our other players to help
us out on the offensive end of the court.”

Redick shot 10-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, as
Duke hit 52.5 percent of its shots from the field.

“I just had an aggressive mindset,” Redick said. “We ran some good stuff for
me today, and I made some moves off the dribble, and then there were some
times when my teammates found me open for threes. Overall, it was a good
offensive day for me.”

Ian Johnson and Brendan Winters each had 17 points for the Wildcats (0-1), who
have lost 19 straight games against the Blue Devils.

The Wildcats were within one-point after Winters hit a three-pointer to make
it 10-9 with 13:44 left in the first half. However, that was as close as they
got the rest of the game. The Blue Devils went on a 11-1 run that was capped
off by a Williams jumper that made the score 21-10 with a little over nine
minutes left in the half.

Davidson got to within five on Johnson’s basket to make it 25-20 with 5:33
left in the half. However, Redick drained a three-pointer on the next
possession and Duke finished off the half with a 16-6 run to lead 41-26.

Redick led all scorers at the half with 19 points.

Duke steadily increased its lead in the second half. The closest Davidson got
was to a 14-point deficit after Johnson completed a three-point play to make
the score 45-31 with 17:17 left in the game.

However, Redick nailed a three-point basket to start a 13-4 Blue Devils run
and they cruised the rest of the way.
