Huskies extend home winning streak to 27 games
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Jamaal Williams scored a game-high 16 points
and Brandon Roy added 14 points and five assists, as the 25th-ranked
Washington Huskies defeated the Idaho Vandals, 90-67, at Bank of America
Bobby Jones Jr. contributed 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine
rebounds for the Huskies (5-0), who haven’t lost to Idaho since 1996. Ryan
Appleby and Jon Brockman scored 11 points each for Washington.
The Huskies took the lead over Gonzaga for the nation’s longest home winning
streak at 27 games.
Igor Vrzina and Tanoris Shepard poured in 14 points apiece for Idaho (0-2),
which travels to Washington State on Saturday.
Washington jumped out to an 11-0 lead before a pair of Vrzina free throws got
the Vandals on the scoreboard. Thanks to a Brett Ledbetter three-pointer,
Idaho cut Washington’s lead to 16-7.
But after trading baskets, the Huskies began to pull away. Washington went on
another run, this one a 13-2 spurt to open a 31-11 lead with 8:16 remaining
in the opening half.
After Vrzina hit four consecutive free throws, the Vandals cut Washington’s
lead down to 33-19. But the Huskies responded by going on a 16-8 run
highlighted by Roy’s back-to-back buckets to open a 49-27 lead at the break.
The Huskies upped their lead to 25 early in the second half before going on a
9-0 spurt to push their advantage to 69-35 with 12:50 left in the contest.
Vrzina’s jumper with 11:37 left temporarily stopped the bleeding, bringing the
Vandals within 69-37.
Washington kept Idaho at bay throughout the rest of the game, holding a lead
of 77-43 before cruising.
The two teams have met 172 times, with Washington holding a 125-47 lead. The
last Vandals win was a 68-52 contest on December 3, 1996…..Idaho shot 94.1
percent from the free-throw line, going 16-of-17 from
the charity stripe…It was the first time the Vandals have played on November
22nd since 1995.
