Brown’s late basket lifts UConn over Gonzaga
Lahaina, HI (Sports Network) – Denham Brown’s one-handed jumper with 1.1
seconds left catapulted third-ranked Connecticut to a 65-63 win over No. 8
Gonzaga in the championship game of the Maui Invitational.
Rashad Anderson had 14 points for the Huskies (4-0), who blew a four-point
lead in the final minute, but managed to win their first in-season road
tournament since 1956.
J.P. Batista had 19 points for Gonzaga (3-1). Adam Morrison, who hit for a
tournament-record 43 points in a 109-106 triple-overtime win versus
Michigan State on Tuesday, finished with 18 points in this contest.
Craig Austrie’s one free throw extended UConn to a 63-59 lead with 37.4
seconds left, but Derek Raivio hit two free throws with 26.7 seconds
remaining for Gonzaga.
Rudy Gay then missed the front end of a one-and-one with 25.1 seconds left.
Hilton Armstrong blocked two shots by Morrison at the other end, but Gonzaga
still got the ball in the hands of Batista, who was fouled with 6.6 seconds
on the clock and made both free throws to tie the game.
The Huskies then raced up the court and Brown dribbled with the ball to the
left baseline before turning around and shooting with his right hand over
Batista and Morrison.
