South Padre Island, TX (Sports Network) – Warren Carter scored with 1.4
seconds left to lift 15th-ranked Illinois over Wichita State, 55-54, in third
round action of the South Padre Island Invitational.

With the win, the Fighting Illini will take on Rutgers in the championship
game Saturday night. Rutgers knocked off Kent State, 55-52, earlier in the
day.

On an in-bound play, Carter took the pass inside the paint, powered the ball
up and one-handed it in for the 55-54 lead with 1.4 seconds left in the game.
The Shockers heaved a desperation half-court shot that did go in, but the ball
was released way after time expired.

Carter finished the game with eight points for Illinois (4-0), which leads the
all-time series 3-0. James Augustine poured in 14 points on 7-of-14
shooting and added 10 rebounds, while Shaun Pruitt chipped in 10 points in the
victory.

Paul Miller led Wichita State (3-1) with 18 points, and Kyle Wilson added 12
points in defeat.

Illinois jumped out of the gates quickly, pushing the ball up the court and
opening the game on a 15-4 spurt. Pruitt converted two layups by driving
hard to the net during the stretch.

Wichita State fought back using a 14-0 run, and took its first lead of the
game at 23-22 after Matt Braeuer hit two free throws with 6:26 remaining in
the first half. They ended the run up 28-22.

The Shockers headed into the break on top 33-29, with Miller’s 10 points
leading the way.

After the early run to open the game, Illinois was ice cold from the floor,
ending the half shooting 38.2 percent.

Wichita State continued to lead in the second half. With 12:30 to go in the
contest, Miller hit a jump shot from the top of the key to put them up 42-35.

The Fighting Illini came back and after Rich McBride hit a deep three-pointer
and Augustine hit a short jumper on back-to-back baskets, they moved ahead of
the Shockers 51-50 with 4:40 to go in the game.

Wilson put Wichita State up 54-53 after finishing off a back door layup with a
1:15 remaining.
