McNamara powers the Orange past the Saints
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) – Gerry McNamara scored 22 points and added
three steals to lead 17th-ranked Syracuse past Siena, 96-77, at the Carrier
Terrence Roberts added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Orange (4-2), who
snapped a two-game losing streak. Demetris Nichols added 14 points and 10
rebounds in the win.
Antoine Jordan netted a game-high 29 points for the Saints (0-2), who lost to
Penn on Monday in their season opener. Jordan shot 9-of-14 from the floor and
10-of-11 from the free-throw line in defeat.
Kojo Mensah was the only other Siena player in double figures with 14 points.
He also had seven rebounds and five steals.
The Orange made nine more baskets from the floor then the Saints (35-24) and
also shot 46 percent (12-of-26) from behind the arc.
After Syracuse scored the first basket of the contest, Siena went on an early
8-0 run, capped by a David Ryan layup 2:11 into the contest. The Orange
responded with 10-0 spurt of their own to retake the lead at 12-8.
Syracuse then pulled away, using a 15-4 run to go up 30-15. McNamara’s three-
pointer started the run with 12:55 left in the first half and Nichols’ layup
just over two minutes later capped the scoring spree.
A 10-0 run by the Saints later pulled them to within 34-29 with 6:05 remaining
in the first, with five of the points coming courtesy of Jordan. However,
Syracuse answered with an 11-2 run of its own, extending its lead to 45-31
with 3 1/2 minutes left.
The Orange would carry a 52-37 lead into the half.
The closest Siena would get in the second half was 60-50 after a pair of free
throws by Jordan with 13:35 left in the half, but Syracuse then used a 10-2
spurt to extend the lead to 70-52 with just over 11 1/2 left.
Later, with the score 72-56, the Saints would get to within 11 at 74-63 with
9:01 remaining, but again, the Orange answered, this time with an 8-0 run for
a 82-63 edge with just over six minutes left.
Arinze Onuaku’s dunk with just under four minutes left gave Syracuse a 92-69
advantage as the Orange shot 53 percent in the second half en route to the
Ryan and Levi Osby ended with nine points for Siena…Darryl Watkins had 10
points and six rebounds for the Orange…Syracuse improved to 7-0 all-time
against the Saints…McNamara shot 6-of-11 from three-point range…Syracuse
out-rebounded Siena 45-33…The Orange had 30 points off of turnovers and 24
points from the bench.
