Aldridge shines as Texas remains undefeated
Austin, TX (Sports Network) – LaMarcus Aldridge poured in a game-high 23
points and grabbed 11 rebounds, as second-ranked Texas blew out Texas-Pan
American, 82-54, at the Frank Erwin Center.
P.J. Tucker contributed 19 points and 11 boards while Mike Williams added 10
points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Longhorns (6-0), who are off to their
best start since the 1981-82 team began the season with 14 straight wins.
“LaMarcus has played 22 collegiate games, he’s doing pretty good,” Texas coach
Rick Barnes said. “The biggest thing he’s adjusting to now (is) his teammates
are really looking for him.”
Johnathan Chatman and Dexter Shankle both had 10 points for the Broncs (2-4),
who have dropped two straight and four of their last five games.
Texas trailed by four points early on, but responded with a 13-0 run to take
control. Daniel Gibson and Aldridge each scored four points during the flurry
while Connor Atchley’s layup with 8:28 remaining in the first half capped the
lengthy spurt and made it 20-11.
The Longhorns led 32-23 at the intermission.
“We were real stagnant (in the first half),” Tucker said. “We got a lot of
shots we wanted but we were missing. We don’t want to be playing our best
basketball right now. Good teams get better as the season goes on.”
Aldridge had 10 points while Tucker added eight for the Longhorns, who hit
just 2-of-12 three-point tries in the opening half. Chatman netted seven
points for Texas-Pan American, which made just one of its nine attempts from
behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas put the game completely out of reach in the second half as Tucker’s
layup just over four minutes in extended the cushion to 41-26. The lead grew
to 19 points moments later and Tucker’s easy bucket with 8:24 left capped a
quick 8-0 run and ballooned the edge to 62-38.
The Longhorns continued to pour it on their overmatched opponents, and led by
as many as 34 points in the waning minutes.
In the second half, Texas made 18-of-34 shots (53 percent), and the Longhorns
finished the game by shooting 45 percent. The Broncs made just 9-of-30 (30
percent) field goals in the second half and shot 34 percent for the game.
