Fazekas powers Nevada to tight win over Kansas
Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) – Nick Fazekas scored a game-high 35 points to
lead 20th-ranked Nevada to a wild 72-70 win over Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.
Mo Charlo netted 12 points to go with seven rebounds for Nevada (4-0), which
improved to 3-0 on the road.
As a team, the Wolf Pack went 21-of-24 from the free throw line, including 17-
of-19 in the second half to come away with the win. Charlo led the way with a
7-for-8 performance, but his miss down the stretch nearly cost Nevada.
Guard Ramon Sessions had eight points and five assists in victory.
Sasha Kaun had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks (2-3).
Brandon Rush added 15 points, eight boards and a pair of blocks, while Micah
Downs went 2-of-3 from three-point range and finished with eight points.
The game became a free-throw contest down the stretch, with Nevada building
its lead to six points with under two minutes to play after converting on its
first 13 attempts of the second half from the charity stripe.
Russell Robinson went to the line for Kansas with 1:22 left and made 1-of-2,
but C.J. Giles tipped in the miss to make it a three-point game.
Downs later cut the deficit to one on a three-pointer with 17 seconds to play
to make it a 71-70 game.
Charlo was then fouled and made just one of his attempts from the stripe,
allowing Kansas an opportunity to tie the game or win. Nevada’s defense came
up big, however, blocking a shot in the paint as time ran off the clock to
secure the win.
Dating back almost 60 years, this series began with a meeting in 1948 and
leans in favor of the Jayhawks by a count of 4-2. Last season Kansas hosted
the Pack right at the Fieldhouse and captured an 85-52 victory. The lone
victory for Nevada prior to Thursday came at home in Reno two years ago,
75-61…Kansas owned a 36-26 advantage in points scored in the paint…The
Jayhawks wound up 13-of-17 from the free-throw line.
