No. 21 Alabama edges Winthrop

Tuscaloosa, AL (Sports Network) – Chuck Davis scored 22 points as 21st-ranked
Alabama survived a major scare by defeating Winthrop, 60-57, at Coleman

Jermareo Davidson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds for the Crimson Tide
(4-1), who won the rebounding battle 32-24 and shot 49 percent from the floor.

Torrell Martin led all scorers with 24 points for the Eagles (4-1), while
James Shuler added 10 points in the loss.

Alabama trailed by four points at the midway mark of the second half, but
three-pointers by Justin Jonus and Ronald Steele helped put the Tide back in
front to stay.

The Crimson Tide led 58-51 with 2 1/2 minutes to play, but watched the lead
shrink to one after Shuler and Martin buried three-pointers.

Davis then made two clutch free throws to stretch the lead to 60-57 and
Winthrop was unable to tie the game in the closing seconds.

Sloppy first-half play by the Tide kept them from opening a substantial lead.
Davis scored 14 points in the half and Alabama led 33-31 at the break.
