Gonzaga’s Fantastic Four downs Cougars
Spokane, WA (Sports Network) – Adam Morrison scored a game-high 25 points as
the ninth-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs easily defeated the Washington State
Cougars, 67-53, at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs used only four players to account for their points, as J.P.
Batista scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sean Mallon netted 12
points and Pierre Marie Altidor-Cespedes scored seven, as Gonzaga (5-2)
defeated Washington State for the seventh straight game.
Gonzaga also won its 28th consecutive home game, keeping it tied for second
with Illinois for the best current homecourt winning streak. The 11th-ranked
Illini defeated Georgetown, 58-48, on Thursday night.
Robbie Cowgill netted 14 points for Washington State (4-2), which saw its
three-game win streak come to an end. Josh Akognon added 13 points in defeat.
Altidor-Cespedes tipped in a Morrison missed jumper, giving the Bulldogs a
16-7 lead with 13:34 left in the first half.
Cowgill hit a jump shot with about five minutes to go in the first half,
putting the Cougars down five points at 26-21.
Gonzaga ended the half with a 10-3 spurt, giving it a 36-24 lead at the
With 11:41 remaining in the second half, Altidor-Cespedes drained a three-
pointer, keeping the Bulldogs up 12 points at 50-38.
Akognon hit a trey, getting Washington State to within seven points at 55-48
with just under seven minutes to go.
That’s as close as the Cougars would get as the Bulldogs outscored them 12-5
the rest of the way.
Gonzaga is now 3-0 at home…The Bulldogs shot 54 percent from the floor while
the Cougars shot only 38 percent…This was the first road game of the season
for Washington State…The Cougars haven’t had much success against ranked
opponents in their history, going just 32-190.
