Sluggish Sooners handle Coppin State

Norman, OK (Sports Network) – Kevin Bookout scored 19 points to lead the
eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners over the Coppin State Eagles, 57-47, at Lloyd
Noble Center.

Taj Gray netted 18 points and Nate Carter added seven points for the Sooners
(5-1), who bounced back with a victory after last Saturday’s defeat at the
hands of No. 4 Villanova.

Tywain McKee had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting and Darryl Roberts added 11
points for the Eagles (0-7), who have lost five of their games this season by
double-digit margins.

The Sooners started out the game by scoring the first five points, but the
Eagles hung with the Sooners early on and took a 6-5 lead — with Roberts
netting all six points — five minutes into the contest.

However, Oklahoma went on a 14-0 run, started by Gray’s two free throws.
Coppin State didn’t score another basket for over seven minutes and Oklahoma
had a 19-6 lead after Taylor Griffin put in a layup with under nine minutes to
play in the first half.

After the Eagles got a basket to make it 19-8, the Sooners finished the half
with a 9-1 run to go into the locker room with a 28-9 lead.

Coppin State shot 3-of-16 from the floor, a 19 percent average, in the opening

The Eagles pulled it together in the second half and shot much better. They
made it a 14-point game after McKee and Augustine Woodlin hit back-to-back
three pointers to make it 44-30 with a little over eight minutes remaining.

Coppin State kept chipping away at the lead and got to within eight points on
a Michael Norwood layup with under a minute to play. However, that was as
close as they got, as Oklahoma held on to give the crowd a victory.
