Ray, Lowry lead No.3 Wildcats past Temple
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Allan Ray scored 20 points and had five
rebounds to lead third-ranked Villanova past the Temple Owls, 75-53, at the
Kyle Lowry added 15 points and five boards for the Wildcats (9-0), who started
a season with nine straight wins for the first time since the 1961-62 season.
Mike Nardi chipped in with 17 points and Randy Foye tallied nine points and
had 11 rebounds in the win.
Mardy Collins netted 19 points for the Owls (6-4), who lost for just the
second time in their last six games. Mark Tyndale contributed 14 points and
eight rebounds in the loss.
Temple stayed close early in the first half, holding brief leads before
Villanova began to set the pace.
Tyndale’s dunk put the Owls ahead 7-6 just under 5 1/2 minutes into the first
half before the Wildcats scored four of the next five points to take a 10-8
Collins’ trey put Temple up 11-10, but Villanova responded with a 12-0 run,
with five points a piece by Ray and Lowry, for a 22-11 lead with under eight
minutes left in the half.
Temple cut it to six at 22-16, but a 7-0 run later in the half extended Nova
to a 35-21 advantage with 2 1/2 minutes left. The Wildcats rolled into the
half with a 37-25 halftime lead.
Lowry paced Villanova with 12 points in the first 20 minutes with Ray adding
11. Collins led the Owls with nine first-half points.
Temple was never able to threaten in the second half as Villanova outscored
the Owls 38-28.
A three-pointer by Ray put Villanova ahead 45-31 six minutes into the second
and Nardi connected from behind the arc with under eight minutes to play for a
51-37 Wildcat lead as the Owls never put together any serious runs.
A 9-3 spurt by Villanova late in the frame extended its lead to 62-44 as the
Wildcats rolled to a victory in the Big Five rivalry.
The 1961-62 Villanova squad won 12 straight games to start its campaign…The
