Strickland powers No. 25 Wake Forest over East Carolina

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) – Trent Strickland poured in a game-high 20
points and grabbed nine rebounds as the 25th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons
held off the East Carolina Pirates, 58-54, at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.

Eric Williams added 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field for the Demon
Deacons (11-2), who have now won four games in a row. Justin Gray chipped in
10 points in the victory.

Courtney Captain led East Carolina (5-7) with 14 points as the Pirates saw a
modest two-game win streak come to an end. Jeremy Ingram netted 10 points and
had five steals in defeat.

Wake Forest has now won all four games in the all-time series.

Trailing 54-52 with around 2 1/2 minutes to go in the game, the Demon Deacons
went ahead after Strickland drove hard to the net and converted a layup and
Williams then hit a free throw for the 55-54 edge.

The score remained there until, with 18.5 seconds left in the game, Gray sunk
two shots from the charity stripe for a 57-54 advantage.

On the Pirates next possession, Japhet McNeil drove hard to the hoop, but
missed an easy layup. Ingram grabbed the offensive board, but his put back
inside rolled off the rim.

Chris Ellis hit a free throw with 2.4 seconds left to seal it for Wake Forest
and avoid the upset.

The Demon Deacons held a one-point advantage at 26-25 at the half with
Williams leading the way with 10 points.
