No. 15 Texas routs Colorado in Austin
Austin, TX (Sports Network) – P.J. Tucker had 24 points, 15 rebounds and four
assists to guide 15th-ranked Texas past Colorado, 89-64, in the Big 12
Conference opener for both teams at the Frank Erwin Center.
LaMarcus Aldridge poured in 19 points and collected nine rebounds for Texas
(12-2, 1-0 Big 12), which has won four straight games. Kenton Paulino added 18
points in the win.
Martane Freeman netted a team-high 20 points and also had eight boards for the
Buffaloes (10-2, 0-1), who had a nine-game winning streak snapped. Richard
Roby was the only other Colorado player in double-figures with 14 points.
The Longhorns jumped in front 11-2 to open the game and played the role of
frontrunner the rest of the way. Aldridge had the first six points of the
contest to kickstart the initial spurt, which was capped by Paulino’s three-
pointer less than five minutes in.
Colorado pulled to within five on a Dominique Coleman jumper midway through
the first half, but Texas went on an 18-6 surge from there to build a 31-14
advantage. Tucker had eight points in the run, including a pair of free throws
with 5:08 remaining, that pushed the lead to 17.
Tucker also added a bucket with seven seconds left to give the Longhorns a
43-24 halftime cushion.
The second half started right where the first left off, as Daniel Gibson
drained a three-ball in the early going to cap a 13-6 Longhorns run that
extended the lead to 56-30.
Texas, which never trailed in the game, was not threatened the rest of the
Colorado dropped to 2-2 on the road… The Buffs have lost nine straight
conference openers…Texas leads the all-time series between these two teams,
9-8…The Buffaloes pulled off the two-game sweep of the Longhorns last
season, which included a neutral-site win. CU has lost four straight in
Austin, however, last winning there in February of 1998.
