Carney stars at No. 5 Memphis handles East Carolina

Greenville, NC (Sports Network) – Rodney Carney poured in a game-high 27
points as the fifth-ranked Memphis Tigers dropped the East Carolina Pirates,
77-67, in Conference-USA action at Minges Coliseum.

Shawne Williams added 13 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked four shots
for the Tigers (14-2, 1-0 Conf-USA), who have won three straight and 11 of
their last 12 overall.

Corey Rouse netted 20 points and had 12 rebounds for the Pirates (6-8, 0-1),
who lost for only the second time in their last five games. Jeremy Ingram
added 12 points with 11 rebounds in defeat.

Trailing by one in the second half, Williams netted four straight points for
the Tigers and put them ahead at 53-50 with about 11 1/2 minutes to play.

With 4:52 left to go in the game, Williams drained a long, three-point shot
from the right corner to give Memphis a 64-59 advantage.

Jonathan Hart hit a free-throw with 2:44 left to pull the Pirates to within
three points at 64-61, but the Tigers responded with Darius Washington hitting
a running jumper for the 66-61 lead.

East Carolina was unable to get any closer as Memphis went 6-of-6 from the
free throw line down the stretch with Carney sinking four of them.

After a fast-paced opening twenty minutes of action, the score was all tied up
at 32-32. Carney had 12 points and was 3-of-7 from beyond the arc for Memphis.

East Carolina was guided by Ingram’s eight points and seven rebounds.

Memphis improved to 5-0 on the road this season…Carney finished the game 6-
of-13 from the three-point line…The Tigers lead the all-time series at
4-0…Memphis held a 45 to 42 advantage in rebounds…East Carolina dropped to
