Bennerman stars as Wolfpack mauls Yellow Jackets
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) – Cameron Bennerman had 16 points, four assists
and a pair of steals to lead 18th-ranked North Carolina State past Georgia
Tech, 87-78, in an ACC showdown at the RBC Center.
Andrew Brackman, Cedric Simmons, Engin Atsur and Tony Bethel each finished
with 14 points for the Wolfpack (14-2, 3-1 ACC), who are a perfect 11-0 at
home this season. Ilian Evtimov added 13 points and collected seven rebounds
in the win.
Jeremis Smith led all scorers with 20 points and gathered five rebounds for
Georgia Tech (9-5, 2-1), which is 0-7 in its last seven meetings with NC
State. Anthony Morrow chipped in 15 points, while Ra’Sean Dickey posted a
double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
NC State finally gained an edge late in the contest, using a 12-2 run to erase
a one-point deficit and assume a 72-63 lead. Simmons started the surge with a
dunk with 7:56 remaining, and Atsur and Bethel followed with three-pointers to
put the Wolfpack up by seven.
Dickey’s layup moments later ended a 2:11 Georgia Tech scoring drought, but
Bennerman answered with a pair of free throws and Brackman added a layup
with 5:02 left to cap the spurt.
“I think that little run we had late in the second half completely describes
our entire team,” said Evtimov. “We are unselfish, we have good shooters, we
are going to take the best shot a team gives us. If we are not open, we are
going to be patient and we are going to try to get a better one.”
Morrow’s three-pointer about a minute later cut NC State’s advantage to six
points. Bennerman, though, drained a three in response at the other end to
make it 76-67 with 3:46 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets got no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Georgia Tech took a 41-40 lead at the break behind Smith, who led all scores
with 13 points in the first half on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Wolfpack build a 40-34 lead on a three-ball by Ilian Evtimov but failed to
score in the final 3:40 of the half, allowing the Yellow Jackets to take the
