Villanova gets back on track
Villanova, PA (Sports Network) – Randy Foye poured in a game-high 19 points
and pulled down six rebounds to lead No. 8 Villanova to a hard fought 73-64
win over Seton Hall in Big East action at The Pavilion.
Kyle Lowry added 14 points and six boards for the Wildcats (12-2, 3-1 Big
East), who stopped a modest one-game skid. Will Sheridan chipped in with 12
points and seven rebounds while Mike Nardi and Allan Ray also reached double
figures with 10 points each in the win.
Donald Copeland paced the Pirates (9-6, 1-3), who lost their third consecutive
game, with 14 points. Paul Gause tallied 13 points and seven rebounds while
Kelly Whitney had 12 and Jamar Nutter had 10 in the loss.
Down seven and reeling from a poor defensive showing in the first half, the
Wildcats came out on fire in the final frame.
A pair of Lowry free throws capped a 19-6 burst and gave Villanova a lead,
53-47, that it would never relinquish.
David Palmer’s three-point play with just under 11 minutes left brought the
Pirates to within two at 53-51, but the Wildcats responded.
Sheridan’s tip-in highlighted another spurt. This time Villanova outscored
Seton Hall 11-3 over the next six minutes to put the game away. The Wildcats
led 64-54 with under five minutes to go.
The Pirates got as close as seven points on a few occasions but Villanova was
strong down the stretch at the charity stripe to seal things.
Seton Hall used superior shooting to take an six-point lead, 41-35, into
the half. Seton Hall was on fire from the floor, hitting on 60.7 percent of
Whitney led the Pirates at intermission with 12 while Foye had seven to lead
