Terry’s free throws lifts Tar Heels over FSU

Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) – Reyshawn Terry scored 17 points and nailed
two free throws with 23 seconds left to give the 24th-ranked North Carolina
Tar Heels an 81-80 win over the Florida State Seminoles at Donald L. Tucker

Wes Miller scored 18 points and Tyler Hansbrough added 15 points and seven
rebounds for the Tar Heels (11-4, 3-2 ACC), who stopped a two-game slide.

Al Thornton and Isaiah Swann both had 19 points and Alexander Johnson added 17
points and five rebounds for the Seminoles (11-4, 2-3), who have lost two in a

The Tar Heels were trailing 50-42 going into the final 20 minutes. However,
they started out the half with a 22-9 spurt and led 64-59 after two straight
treys’ by Danny Green and one by Marcus Ginyard.

North Carolina built its lead to 73-65, but Florida State scored 10 straight
points and took a two-point lead after Swann hit a jumper with 3:12 to play.

But, Miller drained a basket from behind the arc to give the Tar Heels a 76-75
advantage with under three minutes to play.

Jason Rich hit one of two from the charity stripe and Johnson slammed the ball
home to give the Seminoles a 78-76 lead with a little over one minute left.
But, Miller hit another clutch three-pointer on the Tar Heels next touch and
they took a 79-78 advantage.

After Johnson hit two free throws to put Florida State back ahead, Terry was
fouled by Johnson as he was attempting a jump shot. He nailed both from the
charity stripe to make it an 81-80 North Carolina lead with 23 seconds to

The Seminoles tried to get inside and attempt a close shot, but the Tar Heels
defense did not allow them to penetrate and Thornton’s three-point attempt
from the right side bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.

It was a close game early in the contest, but Thornton nailed a jumper to
give the Seminoles the lead and spark a 15-2 run. Swann nailed a trey to
complete the burst and give his squad a 25-13 lead with a little over 12
minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Tar Heels used a couple of small spurts to get back into the contest and
trailed 40-34 after Byron Sanders completed a three-point play with under five
minutes left in the first 20 minutes.

However, Florida State proceeded to go on an 8-2 run and eventually closed out
the half with a 50-42 lead.

North Carolina leads the series 34-8…Sanders finished the game with 10
points…Rich finished with 12 points…The Tar Heels hit 55.6 percent of
their shots and the Seminoles made 49.1 percent of their attempts…Terry also
had eight rebounds.
