Stiemsma joins Landry on the bench
Madison, WI (Sports Network) – The Wisconsin Badgers lost a player to academic
eligibility for the second time this week, as sophomore Greg Stiemsma joins
freshman Marcus Landry.
Stiemsma is battling depression that has caused him academic hardship in
addition to taking a leave of absence from the team.
“I have taken steps to treat my depression and intend to work hard to resolve
my academic issues,” Stiemsma said. “I look forward to competing in practice
and helping my teammates in any way I can. I ask for understanding regarding
my condition and appreciate the patience of everyone as I deal with it. I
would like to thank my teammates, coaches and the fans for their support.”
The 6-11 center played in every contest and contributed strong defensive
numbers (1.5 bpg) in limited playing time (11.7 mpg).
No. 23 Wisconsin (15-4, 5-1 Big Ten) rolled to a 72-43 victory Wednesday night
against unranked Penn State (10-7, 2-4), but will face a greater challenge
Saturday against the Michigan Wolverines (14-3, 4-2).
