Mitchell carries No.24 Louisiana State over Auburn
Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) – Darrel Mitchell had 27 points and eight
assists to lead 24th-ranked LSU over Auburn, 84-69, at Pete Maravich Assembly
Glenn Davis and Tyrus Thomas added 17 points and nine boards each for LSU
(15-5, 7-0 SEC), which has won seven straight. The team has also captured
eight of nine overall and continued its best start to conference play since
winning 17 straight in the 1980-81 campaign.
Frank Tolbert had 15 points for Auburn (9-9, 1-6), which has lost six of
seven. Korvotney Barber and Josh Dollard each had 13 points as Auburn fell to
0-6 on the road this season.
Trailing 54-52 following a jumper by Tolbert with just over seven minutes gone
in the second half, LSU went on an 8-2 run to go ahead for good. Davis’ basket
with 10:36 left in the contest capped the run and gave his club a 60-56 edge.
Later, LSU continued to pour it on. Ahead by six points, 70-64, LSU went on a
10-0 run to put the game away. Davis scored the first four points of the
burst, which was capped by a pair of Garrett Temple free throws with 2:38 on
LSU, which shot 63 percent from the floor for the game, cruised to the finish
Auburn led 13-11 following a three-pointer by Ronny Lemelle with nearly eight
minutes elapsed in the contest. However, LSU answered with an 13-5 surge to
forge ahead. Mitchell’s three-point play with 7:57 remaining ended the run,
giving LSU a 24-18 advantage.
Auburn managed to draw within 26-25 with 6:15 left, but LSU scored 14 of the
final 22 points of the half to go into the break with a 40-33 cushion.
LSU has won four in a row over Auburn…LSU has won 13 straight home
conference games…Auburn hit 41.1 percent of its shots.
