Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) – Rudy Gay had 19 points and 12 rebounds to
pace top-ranked Connecticut to an 88-80 victory over No. 22 Indiana at
Hilton Armstrong and Josh Boone each contributed 16 points, and Marcus
Williams added 12 points and nine assists for the Huskies (20-1), who captured
their eighth straight victory.
Denham Brown finished with 11 points and Rashad Anderson scored 10 for UConn,
which shot 54.2 percent from the field.
Marshall Strickland poured in 16 points for the Hoosiers (13-6), who struggled
at a 37.7 percent shooting clip. Marco Killingsworth had 15 points and
Roderick Wilmont added 14 for Indiana. Robert Vaden had 12 points and nine
The Huskies trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but shot 60.7
percent (17-of-28) over the opening 20 minutes to assume a 41-36 halftime
lead. Two free throws by Killingsworth extended Indiana to a 31-22 lead, but
UConn scored the next nine points, capped by a layup from Williams.
Jumpers from Jeff Adrien and Brown gave the Huskies their five-point edge at
the break, and UConn pushed to an insurmountable advantage with a 12
consecutive points early in the second half. A jam by Gay ended the rally and
pushed the Huskies to a 53-38 cushion with 17:24 remaining.
UConn’s lead reached as high as 20 points, 63-43, on a layup by Boone, but the
Hoosiers cut their deficit to seven twice, the last time at 73-66 following a
layup from Earl Calloway with 7:46 to go. However, the Huskies responded with
a 12-2 run to put the game away. Boone’s jam, resulting in a three-point play,
ended the spurt and pushed the lead to 84-68 with 3:18 remaining.
The Huskies own a 4-2 advantage in the series…UConn outrebounded Indiana,
45-35…The Huskies had 16 turnovers to just seven for the Hoosiers…Indiana
was 10-of-29 from three-point range.
