Memphis holds off Rice to stay hot

Houston, TX (Sports Network) – Chris Douglas-Roberts put in 21 points and
pulled down eight rebounds to lead the No. 3 ranked Memphis Tigers to a 84-79
victory over the Rice Owls at Autry Court.

Rodney Carney added 13 points and Darius Washington Jr. added 12 points for
the Tigers (21-2, 7-0 C-USA), who have won their last 10 games.

Morris Almond poured in a game-high 30 points and J.R. Harrison added 20
points and eight rebounds for the Owls (9-11, 3-4), who have lost two straight
and three of their last four games.

The first half was a tight run affair with neither team able to build much of
an advantage.

Memphis had a couple of four-point leads early in the first half, but Rice
didn’t let them pull away and even took the lead for a brief period after
Almond hit two free throws to put his squad up 31-30 with under six minutes
till the half.

However, Washington Jr. hit back-to-back three pointers down the stretch
and Joey Dorsey had a slam and a layup to help give the Tigers a 46-41 lead
going into the half.

Memphis started to open up the game a little more in the second half.

Douglas-Roberts put in a layup and then drained a three-pointer to give his
squad a 58-46 lead with 16:46 to play.

The Owls got back to within eight points and made it a 62-54 game after Jamaal
Moore hit one-of-two from the line with 11:58 to play.

However, Memphis put together a 10-3 run to give itself a little breathing
room and had a 72-57 lead after Carney slammed it home with 8:29 to play.

However, Rice didn’t quit and put together a 9-2 run to get back within eight
points when Almond hit one from the line to make it 74-66 with a little
over six minutes to play.

The score was 78-70 with under three minutes to play when Almond drained a
trey and Harrison nailed a jumper to get the Owls to within three points,
78-75, with 2:05 to play.

Shawne Williams hit two free throws to give Memphis the five-point advantage
back, but Morris came back down the court and nailed a jumper with 33 seconds

Washington Jr. put in two from the line to make it 82-77 with 25 seconds
left. But, Harrison missed a three-point attempt and Williams nailed two free
throws with 11 seconds left to ice the win for Memphis.

Game Notes

Memphis has won all three contests against Rice in the all-time
series…Memphis hit 43 percent of its shots and Rice connected on 44
percent…Dorsey finished with 11 points…Williams finished with 10
points…The Tigers are 8-0 on the road this season.
