Davis stars as LSU edges Auburn
Auburn, AL (Sports Network) – Tasmin Mitchell scored the go-ahead layup with
30 seconds remaining and No. 25 LSU walked out of Beard-Eaves Memorial
Coliseum with a narrow 65-61 victory over Auburn.
Glen Davis posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Darrel
Mitchell netted 16 points for the Tigers (18-7, 10-2 SEC), which won its
second straight contest.
Tyrus Thomas contributed 14 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
Ronny LeMelle led Auburn (10-13, 2-10) with 21 points and Josh Dollard donated
12 in the loss. Quantez Robertson tallied 10 points for the Tigers.
Trailing 56-51, the Tigers were staring a devastating conference setback in
the face. However, LSU responded with a quick 6-0 burst to take the lead.
Magnum Rolle made a jumper, Davis converted on a pair of free throws and
Thomas’ basket gave the Tigers a 57-56 lead with 3:40 remaining.
Rasheem Barrett countered with a trey to push Auburn back in front, but
Thomas’ collected an offensive rebound and scored to tie the contest at 59-59.
Davis made two free throws to give LSU a two-point advantage, then Dollard
scored inside to square the contest with 48 seconds left.
The Tigers used a pressure defense and Tasmin Mitchell slipped behind the back
level of the zone press and scored inside with 30 seconds remaining. Robertson
missed a three-pointer and LeMelle gathered the rebound and missed a game-
tying jumper in the final five seconds.
Auburn took a 31-30 lead into the half after Brett Howell made a three-pointer
from the right corner with two seconds to go.
