Oklahoma State upsets Texas
Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) – JamesOn Curry had a game-high 22 points and
pulled down nine boards to lead the Oklahoma State Cowboys in an upset win
over the No. 6 Texas Longhorns, 81-60, at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Mario Boggan and David Monds each had 17 points for the Cowboys (14-12, 4-8
Big 12), who stopped a three-game losing streak and won for the first time
under interim coach Sean Sutton.
This was the first win in three tries for Oklahoma State under Sutton. He took
over coaching duties in place of his father, Eddie Sutton, who recently took a
medical leave of absence for the remainder of the season while he recovers
from injuries sustained in an alcohol-related car accident. Any wins the
Cowboys get will go under Sutton’s record.
Kenton Paulino and P.J. Tucker each had 12 points and Daniel Gibson added 11
for the Longhorns (22-4, 10-2), who had a five-game winning streak stopped.
The Longhorns held an early 9-8 lead after Paulino’s layup a little, but the
Cowboys took the lead for good on the other end when Boggan drove the lane
after taking a nice feed from Torre Johnson.
Texas was able to keep within three points for the next couple of minutes.
However, Oklahoma State drained three straight buckets and took a 24-15 lead
after Monds drained a jumper with 3:12 remaining in the opening frame.
The Longhorns got back to within six points when LaMarcus Aldridge connected
on one-of-two from the line to make it 26-20, but Curry’s jumper followed by
Boggan’s trey gave the Cowboys a 31-20 edge at the half.
The Longhorns tried to chip away at the lead and got to within seven points
after Aldridge put in a layup to make it a 40-33 game with 12:54 remaining.
However, Monds nailed a jumper and a three-pointer to spark a 15-4 run for
Oklahoma State, and the squad held a commanding 55-37 lead after Curry drained
a three-pointer with eight minutes to play.
The margin was too much for Texas to overcome and the team got no closer than
14, 68-54, with a little over three minutes to play.
The Cowboys scored the next eight points to put the game out of reach.
