Austin, TX (Sports Network) – P.J. Tucker posted 19 points and eight rebounds
to power seventh-ranked Texas to an 80-55 rout of No. 16 Kansas at the Erwin
Center, ending the Jayhawks’ 10-game victory streak.
LaMarcus Aldridge added 18 points and eight boards for the Longhorns (24-4,
12-2 Big 12), who won for the seventh time in their last eight games and moved
closer to the conference regular season title. Texas is a game ahead of Kansas
(20-7, 11-3) in the Big 12.
Brad Buckman ended with 12 points and nine boards, while A.J. Abrams totaled
12 points for Texas, which built a nine-point halftime lead and was on top by
as many as 28 in the second half.
The 24 wins by Texas ties a school record for most in the regular season. The
1946-47 Final Four team also had 24 victories (26-2 final record).
Julian Wright ended with 18 points and Mario Chalmers scored 10 for Kansas,
which was outrebounded, 36-19.
The Longhorns used an 18-6 run to grab a 34-23 lead. Abrams, who ended the
game 4-of-5 from the field, drained a trio of shots from beyond the arc during
the spurt, and Texas led 36-27 at the half.
A jumper by Wright had Kansas within 42-33 less than two minutes into the
second half, but Texas rattled off a 15-2 burst to put the game away. Daniel
Gibson had a pair of three-pointers in the push, as the Longhorns led 57-35
with 13:41 remaining.
Texas is 24-0 when holding its opponents below 80 points…Kansas leads the
all-time series, 11-5…Aldridge was 9-of-10 from the floor…Texas shot 55.1
percent…Kansas plays at home against Colorado and at Kansas State to close
out the regular season, while Texas plays at Texas A&M and hosts Oklahoma.
