Davis lifts No. 25 Michigan State past Wisconsin
East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) – Paul Davis poured in 27 points and pulled
down nine rebounds, as 25th-ranked Michigan State defeated Wisconsin, 74-65,
in a Big Ten battle at the Breslin Center.
Maurice Ager added 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor for the
Spartans (20-9, 8-7 Big Ten), who won for only the second time in their last
six games. Shannon Brown added 18 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Alando Tucker netted 23 points for Wisconsin (19-9, 9-6), which had no other
players reach double figures in scoring. Brian Butch, Kammron Taylor and
Michael Flowers each netted nine points for the Badgers, who lost for only the
second time in their last six games overall.
Leading by four points at the break, Michigan State opened up the second half
with a 13-5 surge for a 48-36 advantage. Davis netted six points during the
stretch while Brown had five.
The Badgers responded with a 9-2 run, started by a Flowers three-pointer, to
make it a five-point game at 50-45 with around 13 1/2 minutes remaining.
Wisconsin remained close until the Spartans used a mini 6-2 run to take an
eight-point lead at 59-51 with around 8 1/2 minutes to go.
Ager hit two from the line and followed with a three-pointer to increase
Michigan State’s lead to 10 points at 67-57 with less than four minutes left.
Wisconsin was unable to recover the rest of the way as Michigan State
tightened things up defensively.
The Spartans led 35-31 at halftime, helped by Davis, who was 4-of-6 from the
field for 12 points. Brown chipped in 10 points after the opening 20 minutes.
Michigan State improved to 12-1 at home this season…The Spartans will close
out the regular season on Saturday at home against Illinois…Michigan State
leads the all-time series at 65-54…The Spartans shot 50.9 percent from the
field for the game…Wisconsin dropped to 2-7 on the road this season.
