UAB cruises past SMU
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) – Richard Jones and Lawrence Kinnard each scored
12 points as 24th-ranked UAB beat SMU, 69-55, in quarterfinal action of the
Conference USA Tournament.
Jones added four boards, three assists and four steals and Paul Delaney and
Marvett McDonald had 11 points apiece for the Blazers (23-5), who await the
winner of the Southern Mississippi-UTEP matchup. Delaney also dished out five
assists in the contest.
Bryan Hopkins had 13 points and five assists and Devon Pearson netted 10 and
grabbed 17 boards for the Mustangs (13-16), who ended their season losing
seven of their last 10 games.
Brian Morris’ layup brought SMU within 11-10, but the Blazers reeled off an
11-3 spurt, capped by McDonald’s jumper, to extend the lead to 22-13.
The Blazers shot 48 percent from the floor and led 36-26 at the half.
UAB opened the final frame with a 12-6 run, highlighted by a pair of McDonald
treys, to go up 48-32. SMU scored the next four points but the Blazers pulled
away with a 19-6 streak, including five points from Jones and four from
Maurice Gibbs, to push the score to 67-42 with 6:21 to play. The Mustangs only
connected on three field goals in almost 9 1/2 minutes to help fuel the run.
SMU closed the game scoring 13 of the final 15 points, even though UAB’s
starters played throughout the half.
The Blazers connected on 44.4 percent of their shots, while the Mustangs shot
34.5 percent from the floor, including 5-of-18 from beyond the arc. UAB scored
28 points off 26 Mustang turnovers and got 37 points from its bench.
UAB shot 7-of-24 from long distance…SMU outrebounded UAB 45-29…The
Mustangs’ Donatas Rackauskas had nine points and five rebounds…Morris
finished with seven points and five boards.
