Aldridge lifts No. 8 Texas past Texas Tech

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) – LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 points, 16 rebounds —
10 on the offensive end — and two blocks as the eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns
beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 77-70, in quarterfinal action of the Big 12
Conference Tournament.

Daniel Gibson added 18 points, including 4-of-8 from beyond-the-arc, and five
assists and Kenton Paulino scored 13 points for the Longhorns (26-5), who
will take on Texas A&M in the semifinals on Saturday.

Jarrius Jackson had a game-high 28 points on 6-of-8 from long distance and
Alan Voskuil netted 14 for the Red Raiders (15-17), who lost five of their

Led by Aldridge’s nine points, five boards and two blocks, Texas took a 36-25
lead into the locker room. The Red Raiders connected on five field goals in
the first six minutes of the game, but drained only four shots from the floor
in the final 14 minutes of the half.

Texas Tech opened the second half with a 16-7 run, highlighted by a pair of
Voskuil threes, to cut the deficit to 43-41 with 15:45 to play.

A pair of Voskuil free throws gave the Red Raiders a 50-49 edge, their first
lead since 14-13 in the opening frame, with 10:11 remaining.

With the score tied at 54, Paulino’s three-point play began a 13-2 streak,
which put the Longhorns in front 67-56 at the 4:12 mark.

Texas Tech pulled within four, 74-70, with 11.7 ticks on the clock, but P.J.
Tucker hit a pair at the line and a Red Raiders’ turnover on the other end
sealed the victory.

Jackson’s three-pointer with the shot clock running down gave Texas Tech an
early 12-8 lead, but the Longhorns reeled off a 23-6 spurt, including treys
from Gibson, Paulino and A.J. Abrams, as Texas took its biggest lead of the
game, 31-18.

The Longhorns and the Red Raiders each connected on 43 percent of their
shots…Texas won the rebounding battle 44-30, scored 24 points in the paint
and put in 22 second chance points to grab the physical edge…Tucker finished
with 10 points and 13 boards, while Abrams had 10 points and eight
assists…The Longhorns have never won a Big 12 championship…Texas is 31-28
