Capel agrees to contract extension with VCU

Richmond, VA (Sports Network) – Virginia Commonwealth agreed to a two-
year extension of men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel on Friday.

Capel has compiled a 79-41 record in four seasons at VCU, including a
Colonial Athletic Association title in 2004. The Rams posted a 19-10
overall record and a 11-7 conference mark this season. The squad is looking
for their second-straight NIT invitation and third consecutive postseason
appearance.

“Jeff has done a tremendous job with the program, both on and off the court,”
said athletic director Dr. Richard L. Sander. “His dedication to making VCU
one of the top basketball programs in the country is evident in the victories
he has achieved over the past four years.”

During his tenure at the school, Capel has guided his team to the most wins
and highest winning percentage of any Division I program in Virginia and has
posted a 42-11 mark at the squads home in the Alltel Pavilion.

“I am very excited about remaining at VCU,” said Capel. “We have done so many
great things and have built such a strong foundation with the help of all the
VCU fans. It is truly an honor to be part of such a remarkable program.”

The extension will keep him with the school for the next six years.
